KNM exam format

• KNM is taken on a computer.
• The exam lasts 45 minutes.
• Questions are grouped into practical themes such as housing or work and income.
• The revised KNM exam has applied since 1 July 2025.
• Official practice exams are available on the DUO/Inburgeren website.

Health insurance in 2026

• The compulsory health-insurance deductible, eigen risico, is €385 in 2026.
• GP care is excluded from the compulsory deductible.
• Basic health insurance is compulsory for people who live or work in the Netherlands; supplementary insurance is optional.

Naturalisation and permanent residence

• The main naturalisation rule normally requires at least five years of lawful residence.
• Exceptions exist, including a route after three continuous years living together with the same Dutch spouse or registered partner, subject to the official conditions.
• A naturalisation request is submitted through the municipality; the IND assesses it.
• The integration requirement normally has to be met.
• Renouncing the previous nationality is often required, but statutory exceptions exist.
